About Presidio Handyman

Serving San Francisco, CA since 2015

The Business

Presidio Handyman was founded in San Francisco in 2015 to fill a specific gap in the local market: residents needed reliable, skilled repair and maintenance help without the overhead and scheduling friction that comes with larger contractors. From the start, the focus has been on showing up on time, communicating clearly, and doing work that holds up.

Over the years, the business has built a solid reputation in the city through word of mouth. Most of our new clients come from referrals by existing clients — homeowners and property managers who've had a good experience and passed our name along. That referral base keeps us accountable. We can't afford to cut corners when the next client likely knows the last one.

We work primarily with residential clients and small commercial tenants across San Francisco, handling everything from single-item repairs to multi-day projects. We're not a general contractor, and we don't pretend to be — but for the wide middle ground between a call to a specialist and a full renovation, we're the right call.

Meet the Manager

Roland Stout is a San Francisco native who has spent most of his life in the city. Growing up here gave him a solid understanding of the older homes and buildings that make up so much of the Bay Area's housing stock — the Victorian flats, the Edwardian row houses, the mid-century apartment buildings, and the countless homes that have been modified and repaired by many different hands over the decades.

Roland has been working in the trades for over a decade, handling everything from minor repairs to larger renovation projects. He started Presidio Handyman to offer residents a reliable, straightforward option for home maintenance without the hassle of chasing down contractors or waiting weeks for a callback.

He stays connected to the San Francisco community by working primarily with local homeowners and small businesses in the area. A lot of his work comes through word of mouth from satisfied customers, which he takes seriously — it means each job directly reflects on the next.

Trade Experience

Presidio Handyman's work spans carpentry, drywall finishing, basic plumbing, tile setting, fixture installation, and general maintenance. Over more than a decade of hands-on work, the skills developed cover both the technical side of each trade and the judgment that comes with repetition — knowing when to cut versus when to shim, when compound is dry enough to sand, when a fitting needs a new flare versus a new valve.

San Francisco's housing stock presents challenges that general handymen from elsewhere often find unfamiliar: balloon framing in older buildings, lathe-and-plaster walls, odd stud spacing, and decades of DIY repairs layered on top of one another. We've seen it all.

Bay Area Building Codes

San Francisco operates under the San Francisco Building Code, which adopts the California Building Code with local amendments. For handyman work, most repair and replacement tasks don't require permits — but knowing where that line is matters. We're familiar with when permits are required (structural modifications, window replacements that change rough opening size, certain electrical upgrades) and when standard repair work falls under maintenance exceptions.

When a job is close to the line, we'll tell you upfront whether a permit is advisable and refer you to a licensed contractor if the scope requires one. We don't take work that we shouldn't be doing.

Professional Equipment

We arrive with professional-grade tools appropriate for the job — not homeowner hardware that slows down the work or produces inferior results. Common equipment on hand includes:

  • Circular saws, jigsaws, and reciprocating saws for precision cuts
  • Corded and cordless drills, impact drivers, and oscillating tools
  • Laser levels, digital levels, and layout squares
  • Stud finders, moisture meters, and voltage testers
  • Professional caulking guns, mixing paddles, and drywall tools
  • Tile saws and angle grinders for clean tile cuts

Service Philosophy

Presidio Handyman is built on a simple premise: do the work you said you'd do, at the price you quoted, and make it last. That sounds basic, but it's surprisingly uncommon. Too many homeowners have hired contractors who provided vague estimates, added charges mid-job, or delivered repairs that failed within months. We've built the business by being the opposite of that experience.

Honest assessment is central to everything. If a job is more complex than it looked, we tell you before proceeding, not after. If the repair you're asking for isn't the right solution for the underlying problem, we explain why and suggest an alternative. If a job is outside our scope, we refer you to someone who can handle it rather than attempting work we shouldn't.

Because most of our clients come back and send us referrals, we have every incentive to do quality work every time. That alignment between our interests and yours is one of the practical advantages of working with a small, locally owned service over a large impersonal contractor.
